|
Our teachers and trainers are qualified and initiated to the British Council standards and have extensive experience of teaching English both in the UK and overseas. Through their practical skill, knowledge, and personal qualities, they provide learners and trainees with guidance, support and encouragement throughout the course. We aim to enable you to achieve your full potential. |
The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults
Our four-week full-time and 16-week part-time intensive initial teacher training courses lead to the award of the internationally recognised certificate. The Cambridge certificate is an essential first step in a career in TESOL. The qualification is an essential minimum requirement for teachers in a British Council accredited school. Successful participants will be able to use this qualification to teach in schools in the UK and overseas. Over 10,000 candidates complete a CELTA course each year.
Our Aim
We aim to empower the trainees to develop a greater understanding of the learning and teaching process. The Academy encourages participants to adopt a reflective, questioning and critical approach, central to which is the participant's own experience, attitudes and beliefs. Trainers will be guides, facilitators and resources rather than fonts of all knowledge. Courses are hands-on, innovative, challenging, and enjoyable.
Who takes the course?
The course is designed for people from a wide variety of backgrounds, who may or may not have any teaching experience. All participants must have a very good command of English in order to be able to cope with the demands of the course. They must be able to express themselves clearly and accurately both orally and in writing. Participants should have a high level of motivation and commitment and be able to work as open and reflective members of a team.
Applicants must:
Be at least 18 (it is generally recommended that candidates should be aged 20 or over, but candidates aged between 18 and 20 can be accepted at the centre's discretion).
Have an awareness of language and a competence in both written and spoken English, which will enable them to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels (C2/C1 on the CEF).
Have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers and to complete successfully the written assignments and the assessment of practice teaching.
Candidates should normally have, as a minimum entry requirement, a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education.
Course Contents
The intensive course:
- Integrates theory and practice. Provides a minimum of 120 contact hours between tutors and trainees involving input, tutorial support, supervised lesson planning, feedback, and peer observation.
- Requires the submission by each candidate of a portfolio of work including materials related to teaching practice and written assignments.
Full-time four-week course:
- Includes six hours of assessed teaching practice per trainee.
- Includes six hours of classroom observation of experienced ELT professionals.
- Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pm
The part-time 16-week course:
- Includes 6 hours of observations of experienced teachers to be carried out during the day. Includes 6 hours of assessed teaching practice.
- Includes Teaching practice with feedback on Wednesday evenings from 5.30 to 8.30.
Three evenings a week Input sessions: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5.30 pm to 9.00 pm. Teaching Practice and feedback: Wednesdays from 5.30pm to 8.30pm.
How am I assessed?
Candidates are assessed continuously throughout the course and there is no final examination. Each course is moderated by an external assessor, who is appointed by Cambridge ESOL. Assessment consists of 3 components. They are: Assessment of Teaching Practice, Written Assignments and Professional Development. Candidates are assessed on their overall ability over 6 hours of teaching practice, working at two levels of ability. There are four written assignments. Two assignments explore aspects of teaching and learning English at adult level, one involves work on the language system of English and one is a reflection on classroom teaching. Professional Development is assessed by the candidate's overall performance on the course. In order to gain the qualification, candidates must pass all three components. There are three grades - Pass, Pass 'B' and Pass 'A'.
One-Day CELTA Taster
The Taster Day is a one-day (six hour) introductory course designed and delivered by experienced Academy
tutors for trainees with or without teaching experience. It is an occasion for potential applicants
to have a clearer idea of what the profession involves before committing themselves to a longer,
more expensive certificate course.
The day is full of practical tasks and offers the opportunity to experience the teaching context
and meet some of the staff.
By the end of the day, some of the questions below will have been answered:
- Who learns English, why and where? How does it feel to be a beginner? What needs to be learned? How much about English do I know? and do I need to know?
- What makes an effective teacher?
